[love is more thicker than forget]

this poem was written in lowercase so i'm also going to match the "style" of this poem and write my blog similarly. the poem i decided to analyze is called love is more thicker than forget by E.E. Cummings. when i first read this poem, it really resonated with the way i perceive the concept of love and it was simply just put into the words that i was thinking of. it goes like this:

love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail

it is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea

love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive

it is most sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky

overview:

this poem explores love as something way beyond measure, beyond any reason. it is "most mad and moonly" yet "most sane and sunly" which implies that love is both delicate and indestructible, both fleeting and eternal. he uses these contradictions to show that love cannot be defined by human definitions, it just simply exists. i especially love the final lines:"more it cannot die / than all the sky which only / is higher than the sky." this idea that love is more infinite than infinity itself is really beautiful yet complex at the same time.

analyzing the poem:

  • contradictions + paradoxes > ("thicker than forget, thinner than recall") show love’s complexity- both fragile and strong, fleeting yet constant.
  • unconventional grammar + structure > doesn't use traditional rules, mirroring love’s unpredictable nature in a way
  • repetition of extremes > ("most mad and moonly," "most sane and sunly") emphasizes love’s ability to be both chaotic and grounding
  • natural imagery (sea and sky) > symbolizes love’s immeasurability and boundlessness
  • comparative language ("more/less") > shows love overpowers logic, making it more infinite than infinity itself

  • my deeper thoughts:

i think that this poem is really complex, even though at first it might seem short and simple. it’s filled with contradictions that can be confusing at first, but each stanza and line carries a deeper meaning. i specifically chose this poem because it resonates with how i perceive love, as i said before. i believe love isn’t something that can be defined in a single way since it’s such a broad and layered concept. for one person, love might mean friendship, while for another, it’s something romantic. there are so many different ways people interpret love, which is what makes it so complex. this topic intrigued me because every time i tried to define love myself, i struggled to put it into words, and this poem captured exactly what i was trying to express. it illustrates love in a way that feels universal- simple yet deeply complex, tying together different perspectives and contradictions to show love’s true essence.

    my attempt:

time is less fleeting than always
    more endless than a blink
    more silent than a hurricane
    more breathing than to think

it is most lost and lonely
    and less it shall remain
than all the stars which only
    are brighter than the rain
